Mario Edmund Mares was born in San Pablo, Ca on March 12, 1963 to his parents Ben and Mary Mares. He attended Bayview Elementary and Walter T. Helms J. H. schools. In his younger years he played little league baseball and had a paper route in his neighborhood. His family moved away to Ukiah in 1976 where he attended Ukiah high school and played on the football team. In 1982 he married Annette Vanober together they had 3 daughters. Mario owned a pizza parlor in Cappella north of Ukiah. He coached his daughter Salina in an all-girls softball team and made it to the state championship.

He belonged to a car club called The Brown Delegations of Ukiah. He helped co-found a car club named “Raza Unida” of Richmond. After returning to the bay area in 1984 Mario joined the Laborers Union Local 324 of Richmond. He loved his trade in commercial building. Mario took great pride in building shopping centers and other structures from the ground up around the north, south and east bay. Hilltop Plaza, Blackhawk Mall, and U.C. Berkeley Campus, just to name a few.

Mario, Joni and Angel began their journey together in 2007. For 5 years Mario coached Angel in little league baseball at Tara Hills. Together they often took walks at Pinole/Hercules shoreline and Ocean Beach. Mario loved spending time with his grandchildren, and he was always excited about Raider games & tailgating with his brothers Benny & Johnny. His pastimes were gardening, baking peanut butter cookies, and working on puzzles with Johnny. Mario was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma 2013. In September of 2015 he underwent a Stem Cell transplant then chemo treatments for maintenance. While in remission the family took a trip to Disneyland, and on June 3, 2017 Mario proudly walked his daughter Alexandria down the aisle. In the summer of 2017 Mario took a trip to the island of Kauai with Joni, his mom Mary, and his brother Benny. During Mario’s last days he planted a succulent garden, tinkered with his 51 Buick Dynaflow and took it for one last cruise. Mario was surrounded by his loved ones when his Lord Jesus called him home.

He is survived by Joni Aranda his soulmate of 11 years, his parents Ben and Mary Mares, Brother Benny Mares, Sisters Vivian Roberts and Cindy Loera, children Salina Mares, Alexandria Pavlatos , Felica Mares and Angel Aranda, grandchildren Alexia Combs, Kayla McCullough, Ben and Andrew Pavlatos, Jaden Simon, Jayla Foster, Isaiah, Carmella, and Jahsai Gonsales. Brother in law Shawn Roberts, and son in law Benny Pavlatos. Mario had 4 godchildren and shared a brotherhood with many.

Memorial Services will be held on Friday, 6/29/18 at 4-8 pm
